Design beyond the west
Guest-editor of CREATIE, october 2010
Hans Wolbers and I are guest-editors on behalf of Lava for CREATIE this October. We dedicated the entire issue to design beyond the West. There are a lot of people out there who think that design from the rest of the world is "ok, but not up to our standards yet". We couldn't disagree more. So we put talent from Taiwan, China, India, South-Africa, Tunisia, Iran and Brazil in the spotlight.
Featuring
Asian/Australian/European Alvin Chan, design director at Nike, knows all about navigating different cultures. Radjesh Dahiya is leading India towards a design-thinking-design-culture. Chinese artist Pan Jian Feng is working for global brands in a very distinct local way. PetPunk talk about their youth growing up in Lithuania under communism and building a local design culture from scratch. Yomar Augusto, Guilherme Borchert and Breno Pineschi talk about the up and coming wave of Brazilian talent. Stanley Wong , Chinese first creative director working abroad. Nja Mahdaoui, born in 1937, is a Tunesian calligrapher of great fame, and we feature his stricking work for Gulf Air's 50th anniversary. We also have short image spreads by Disturbance (South-Africa), Open! Design (Russia), MBA Cultural (A studio in the jungle in Brazil), and Homa Delvaray and Amirali Ghasemi from Teheran.
